Assignment

For this assignment you are to interview a Human Service professional who is practicing in a social service agency or private setting. The interview can be conducted face to face, by phone, or Skype. The session should be approximately 20-30 minutes.

This interview is an informational interview.

A good interviewer is always prepared before meeting with the participant. You are to develop a guide that consists of open-ended questions. These questions are to keep the interview organized and to initiate discussion. Divide your guide into the following 3 sections:

(a) Demographics (job position, agency, credentials, expertise,

(b) Role as Human Services professional (description of population and role in the position, typical daily duties), and

(c) View (why did they choose to be in the field of human services and what are the rewards and challenges of the job?).

Organization of the Paper (3-5 pages)

I. Introduction: How did you find this interviewee? Present their credentials, description of their work place, the population they work with, and their expertise.

II. Setting: Describe where the interview took place and if it was busy, quiet, interruptions. How did this setting help or hinder your interview?

III. Role : Describe what you learned about this individual’s daily role. What are their job requirements? What did you find surprising? What did you find inspiring? Did anything they say discourage you?

IV. Rewards and Challenges: What did this individual share with you regarding the rewards and challenges of the job?
