response to peers capstone week nine
Peer one: Public speaking has never been on my top list of favorite things to do. I had read somewhere a long time back that people fear public speaking more than death, and I am one of them. I have to admit, when I hear the word presentation, I get anxiety. I have done plenty of presentations throughout my years in college, including presenting for an hour for my final thesis in graduate school, but have never had to present at work. In regard to personal strength when presenting, I am very well organized, speak slowly, maintain eye contact, and do not use ‘um’ as a pause when speaking. My public speaking professor in college would count out loud every time you said ‘um’ while presenting. This made everyone more aware, so to re-train their brain not to say it at all.
I am actually a very good presenter when my nerves don’t get the best of me, so I have to say the only weakness I have in presenting is stage fright. The only method for improving this is practice, by getting up and speaking in front of people every chance you get. Also, practicing in front of a small audience at home, or in front of friends before the actual presentation can calm nerves and help you to become comfortable with the material. It is important to work on your presentation skills if you are planning on presenting your findings in a more formal setting, as you want your audience to know that this information is important to you as a professional. You also must be prepared to answer any questions the audience might have regarding your topic. It is important that you deliver your results in a clear and concise way, so the information is received properly, especially if it will be used in evidence-based practice. It is also important to keep your audience engaged by showing enthusiasm in your message. If your audience senses your sincere passion, “they’ll hang on every word†(Dale Carnegie, 2020).

Peer two: Speaking in font of people is not my favorite thing to do and nerves often get the best of me. Therefore, public speaking is one of my weaknesses. On the other hand, because I dislike speaking in front of people, I tend to be very well prepared when I have to, which alleviates some stress. So, on the other hand my strength is organization and being well prepared. Practicing before hand is a must for me. I am not one of those people who can just “wing itâ€. Having all the information that I need to present, put into organization and easily accessible information helps me feel more confident. Knowing what is being presented inside and out is also a way for me to feel confident that I will be able to answer any question that is sent my way. Visual aids for the audience are very helpful tools and another way organization is shown. The layout, use of color, imagery, and placement of design elements to a visual aid is crucial to the delivery (Berg & Hicks, 2017). In addition, Berg & Hicks (2017) state “poster presentation essentials include being prepared, professional appearance, and professional behaviorâ€.
