MUSIC USED IN THE SOCIAL MOVEMENT

(Start this analysis on a new page in your essay)

Finding Appropriate Song Lyric. Each student will find a song lyric that addresses the social movement you analyzed. It can bring awareness to and/or protest the specific social issue. Regardless of the type of music to which you already listen, chances are someone is writing about the issue. You may choose a song with which you are familiar or choose a lyric from a different genre. It does not matter if the song is current, or from a different time in history.

— The song title will be the first line at the top of the page.

— The next line will list the author(s) of the lyric and the copyright date.

— The next line will list a reference for the source of the lyric (can be the URL from a lyric repository, or copyright information from the liner notes of a CD or cassette or LP, etc.).

Historical Context of the Lyric (if found). After the info provided above, skip a line and write a paragraph including any information you find about the background or circumstances surrounding the writing of the lyric, such as the political, social, and/or economic environment; or a specific event that influenced the writer. You can also include, but do not have to, any information on who sang the song, on what album, etc. Some of this information may not be available; if that is the case, tell me so I know that you looked for it.

Typed Song Lyrics. After providing the info above, type the song lyrics (single-spaced). After the song lyrics, skip a line and continue with the analysis below.

Analyzing the Song Lyric. [NOTE: The information in this section should be written about the lyric, NOT any music videos of the song. Music videos tell you how other people interpret the lyric. This paper is about how YOU analyze the lyric.] After reading the lyric, think about what the author is trying to say. Your analysis must include, but is not limited to: (1) how does the lyric protest the problem? (2) is the lyric written from the perspective of someone experiencing the issue, or from an outsider? (3) what is the mood of the lyric? is it anger? nostalgia? fatalism? pessimism? hope?, etc.; (4) what kind of social change is the author trying to bring about (structural / cultural)? (5) why did you choose that particular lyric? As evidence for the first four points above, use short quotes from the lyrics to support your analysis. [NOTE: For this section of the paper only, you do not have to provide a specific reference for each quote taken from the song lyric, as long as you put the quoted information inside “ “ marks, because it is understood that all the quotes are from the lyric you are including with your analysis paper. Information used from any source other than the song lyric you are analyzing MUST be cited within the body of the paper, and included in the reference/ bibliography page.]

Learning.Briefly explain in your report what you have learned about yourself while conducting this project on a social movement and analyzing song lyrics that are/can be used as part of the social movement.

References.Provide a bibliography page of sources. You may use any citation style you wish, as long as you use it correctly and consistently.

In order not to be overwhelmed by this project, you need to systematically work on each step in a timely manner and you need to narrow down and FOCUS as much as possible. With the exception of the section on “Learning,” all sections of the paper should be written using academic style of writing.
